When is a river not a river

I was pondering the existential journey of rivers the other day. Their ever-changing paths remind me of the philosophical debates about identity and persistence. Like, if a river shifts its course over centuries, is it still the same river? Maybe hydrology is just nature’s way of making us rethink our own identities. Thoughts?
